The main source for the Middle Dutch play Esmoreit seems to be a fairy tale classified as Aarne-Thompson 652: The Prince Whose Wishes Always Come True: The Carnation. In adapting this folktale for the stage, the Middle Dutch poet removed all elements of magic and miracle. Instead he introduced the element of polarity bewteen Christianity and Islam. These adaptations have caused some inconsistency in the logic of the dramatic narrative.
