This article deals with the Middle Dutch private letter (ca. 1200-1550), a neglected genre in Medieval Dutch studies. The corpus comiled by the author so far (including more than 300 letters) provides material for new research. After defining the genre of the private letter, the author explores various possibilities for further research. New approaches, such as classification of letters based on codicological analyses and studies on the contents and function of private letters, promise to be fruitful. The article concludes with a list of Middle Dutch private letters.
