The manuscript tradition of the Brabantine mystic Hadewijch had an earlier start than is commonly believed. This conclusion is based on research of the fourteenth-century manuscripts. Palaeographical evidence shows that both ms. Brussels, Royal Library 2879-80 and the sixth booklet of ms. Paris, Bibliothèque Mazarine 920 date from the second quarter of the fourteenth century. A codicological study of the manuscripts indicates that the Mengeldichten 1-16 (by Hadewijch) and the Mengeldichten 17-29 are from different origin.
