The Middle Dutch text known as The Liège Diatessaron or the Liège Life of Jesus has come down to us in one manuscript dating from the last quarter of the thirteenth century (Liège, University Library 437). In 245 chapters the text provides a continuous story of the life of Jesus, from birth through death to resurrection and glorification. The story is based upon a harmonized version of the texts of the four Gospels. In this Life of Jesus, glosses, expositions and additions have been added to the canonical text of the Bible. The origin of these additions is the subject of vigorous debate, and opinions range from favouring contemporary sources to sources dating back to the early centuries.
