This article presents a reflection on stylistic and aesthetic aspects of Middle Dutch epic poetry. On the basis of the analysis of repetitions of sounds and words the writer argues that authors of 13th century texts like Van den vos Reynaerde and Vanden levene ons Heren were very well aware of the form and beauty of their texts. In this way stylistic and aestetic research attributes to a better understanding of the single text. Although primarily concerned with formal aspects of texts, investigation of style and beauty is very well compatible with attention for the cultural dimensions of medieval literature.
